The Spanish Department sampled Spanish Tapas on Wednesday 9 November. Review by Andrea Nebot Marsol (Year 12):

The Junior Spanish Society enjoyed a Spanish cuisine session. They learned how to prepare tapas, which are a wide variety of appetizers typical of the Spanish cuisine.

The word tapas is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, which means to cover. Before the 19th century European roads were in bad condition, travelling was slow and exhausting. Inns called posadas grew up along the roads offering meals and rooms, as well as fresh horses for travellers. Since few innkeepers could write and few travellers could read, inns offered their guests a sample of the dishes available on a tapa

The session focused on montaditos. A montadito is a flavourful topping on a small slice of bread. The pupils learned the names of the different typical ingredients and also how to prepare them. They tried to combine the different ingredients in order to create their own personalised tapas recipe. By the end of the session pupils had experimented and sampled a wide variety of unique and creative montaditos.
