The Economic Specialists (Years 12 and 13) visited Brussels during the first week in the October half term. There was a busy programme of activities which included briefings from senior figures of politics, diplomacy and industry as well as visits to the European Parliament, European Commission, Council of the European Union, Brussels University, the European School of Brussels II, Leonidas chocolate factory and NATO Headquarters.

This was an extremely interesting time to be in Brussels and pupils were able to witness the preparations for the European summit meeting which would be attended by Prime Minister, Theresa May. BREXIT was a common theme running throughout the visit and pupils enjoyed lively discussions with the various experts including; Richard Ashworth MEP, Sir Jonathan Faull, formerly the European Commission’s ‘most senior Brit’ and diplomat Gerald Weldon UKRep, Brussels.

Highlights of the trip include a role play in the European Parliament and beating the European School of Brussels II in the debate; ‘This House believes that the European Union has been beneficial for its member states’.  Charterhouse lost on penalties in a football match against the European School to leave overall honours even. The visit to the Leonidas chocolate factory, including tastings and the masterclass was much enjoyed by all.

The Economic Specialists had an educational, interesting and very enjoyable trip.
