On 9 February, the Economics IB pupils visited two City of London firms, Union Bank Switzerland (UBS) and Allen and Overy (international law firm). Review by Harinda de Silva (Year 12):

Our first tour was to one of the world’s largest banks, Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS), and one of our tour guides was James Wong, an Old Carthusian, who now works for the bank. We started in the Auditorium where we were lucky enough to see one of Lewis Hamilton’s racing cars, sponsored by UBS. We then visited a meeting room followed by three market floors where stock and share prices were being analysed.

On the seventh floor, with a formidable view of St Paul’s Cathedral as well as the City of London, we were introduced ‘the veteran’, Nigel Bretton, UBS UK Chief Financial Officer. He spoke about his beliefs on one of the most important aspects of working in UBS, the requirements of high academia scores and the personality and leadership skills that are needed in City work. Chris Gentle, former Deloitte Head of EMEA Research, completed our visit with a talk on Globalisation and current affairs, such as Brexit and how this has an affect on UBS.

Our second tour was with the law firm, Allen and Overy. We were introduced to Simon Hill, Head of Global Capital Markets, Alex Noezi and Paul Allan. The first lecture was about the firm and what law firms do, followed with a talk on securitisation and a dialogue on derivatives. Finally, Simon Hill related our learning of Macroeconomics, a topic we are currently studying, and how this has a huge effect on Allen and Overy.

This was an extremely interesting and informative trip and we thank UBS and Allen and Overy for hosting us.
