The Charterhouse ski team returned triumphant from Les Deux Alpes on Tuesday, 20 December following a very successful trip to the 2016 Independent Schools Ski and Snowboard Championships.
The team enjoyed great snow and sunny conditions for the first four days of training and racing during which they participated in the Slalom and Giant Slalom competitions on the Mont-de-Lans glacier. Unfortunately, with temperatures falling to minus 20C and with high winds, the final day of parallel slalom racing had to be cancelled.
Charterhouse skiers put in their best ever performance as a team to win the overall bronze medal in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom competitions. Individually, Max Fairfull took gold in the Junior Giant Slalom, Oliver Froggatt claimed the Snowboarding Slalom title, and Archie Dodd won the Under 16s combined event.
Congratulations to the joint winners - Hurstpierpoint College who reclaimed their Giant Slalom crown, with Wycombe Abbey girls' team beating the boys to the Senior Slalom team award.
As ever, our pupils learnt a lot from the expert tuition they received from the French Ski Federation (ESF) instructors. They forged a very positive team spirit during the trip, with pupils from every year group taking part and thoroughly supporting one another. For some, it was their first experience of racing while for other accomplished skiers, this was an opportunity to test themselves against some of the best skiers from independent schools in the UK.
We look forward to next year's competition!
